How to get a new vehicle registration in Montana


It is a requirement in Montana to register all your vehicles within 60 days. Whether your car is used or new or purchased from a dealership or an individual you must register your vehicle. If you registered your vehicle in another state it will not be valid you must register in Montana. Your first time registration must be done in person after that your yearly renewals can be done in person or by mail.

Registering for the first time:

  • The title must be signed properly. If a sale or change of ownership has taken place the signatures on the title must be notarized. New residents will have to submit their out of state titles.
  • A bill of Sale.
  • Click here to fill out an application for a certificate of title for motor vehicle.
  • You will not need to get emission testing done on your vehicle.
  • Bring all the paperwork to your local county treasurer's office. You will also need proof of insurance, and the odometer reading, if the vehicle is less than 10 years old.
  • If you registered your vehicle in another state you must also bring the original out-of-state title. If you can't get the title bring the registration document with proof of sales tax payment.

Fees:

  • The fee will vary depending on the model year or the vehicle's total weight.
  • There is a fee of $12 for the title application for light passenger vehicles.
